Fruit Trees

Citrus, stone fruit, and the old Levantine standards: fig, pomegranate, loquat, carob, and mulberry. Grafted stock selected for Lebanese orchards and courtyards, and for the altitude they will actually be planted at.

Sweet Orange

Citrus sinensis

The orange that built the Lebanese coast. Sweet, thin-skinned fruit on a compact evergreen that flowers white and scents an entire courtyard in spring. Best below about 700m, where winter cold stays gentle.

Lemon

Citrus limon

A lemon tree earns its space twice over: heavy scent when it flowers, and fruit through the coldest months when the rest of the garden has stopped giving. Happy in open ground along the coast and in a large pot anywhere the winter turns sharp.

Mandarin

Citrus reticulata

Easy-peeling, intensely fragrant, and the first citrus most Lebanese children learn to pick themselves. Naturally smaller than an orange tree, which makes it the citrus to choose for a courtyard or a large terrace pot.

Apple

Malus domestica

A mountain crop in Lebanon, and one that rewards altitude: apples need real winter cold to set fruit properly, so they perform far better above 900m than on the coast. Blossom in spring is worth the space on its own.

Pear

Pyrus communis

Longer-lived and more forgiving than apple, with upright growth that suits a narrow space or a trained wall. Like apples it wants mountain winters, and it will happily outlast the person who plants it.

Peach

Prunus persica

Pink blossom before the leaves, then fruit that never survives the trip from a supermarket in the condition it leaves the tree. Fast to crop, generous, and comparatively short-lived, so plant a replacement before the old one tires.

Apricot

Prunus armeniaca

The earliest blossom in the orchard, sometimes as soon as February, which is exactly its weakness: a late frost catches the flowers and there is no crop that year. Plant it somewhere sheltered and slightly elevated where cold air drains away.

Sweet Cherry

Prunus avium

Spectacular in flower and demanding in fruit. Cherries want mountain cold, deep soil, and someone willing to argue with the birds. Where conditions suit them, in the Lebanese highlands, few trees are more worth the trouble.

Plum

Prunus domestica

The most forgiving of the stone fruits and the heaviest cropper for the space it takes. Handles a wider range of Lebanese altitudes than cherry or apple, and often fruits so generously that branches need support.

Fig

Ficus carica

As close to a native as an orchard tree gets here. Figs ask for almost nothing, tolerate poor stony ground, and often give two crops a season. The leaf alone is worth the planting.

Pomegranate

Punica granatum

Scarlet trumpet flowers in early summer, then fruit that stores for months after picking. Drought tolerant once established and equally at home as a small tree or a thick informal hedge.

Loquat

Eriobotrya japonica

The akkadinia that ripens before anything else in the orchard, and one of the few trees that flowers in autumn and fruits in spring. Broad leathery leaves give it a tropical presence in an otherwise Mediterranean garden.

Persimmon

Diospyros kaki

Grown for two things: fruit that hangs like lanterns after the leaves drop, and autumn colour that few other trees here can match. Astringent varieties need to go fully soft before they are edible, which catches people out.

Quince

Cydonia oblonga

Too hard and too sour to eat raw, and completely transformed by cooking into the fragrant preserve that fills Lebanese kitchens in autumn. A gnarled, characterful small tree with large pale pink flowers.

White Mulberry

Morus alba

The tree that fed Lebanon's silk industry, and still found beside old houses across the mountains. Sweeter and paler than the black mulberry, with fruit that does not stain, and dense shade in summer.

Black Mulberry

Morus nigra

Darker, sharper, and far better flavoured than the white mulberry, and the one worth planting for eating. Slow to start and long-lived, developing a leaning, characterful trunk with age.

English Walnut

Juglans regia

A large, generous shade tree that happens to produce nuts. Needs real space and real patience, and repays both. Common through the Lebanese mountains, where the winter chill suits it.

Carob

Ceratonia siliqua

One of the toughest trees in this catalogue and deeply rooted in Lebanese food culture through carob molasses. Evergreen, drought-proof once established, and capable of holding dry stony slopes where little else will grow.

Mango

Mangifera indica

Strictly a coastal and frost-free proposition in Lebanon, and a striking evergreen where it works, with bronze new growth that flushes several times a year. In cooler areas it makes an excellent large container tree given winter shelter.

Avocado

Persea americana

A handsome broad-leaved evergreen that has become genuinely productive along the Lebanese coast. Roots are shallow and easily damaged, so it wants a permanent, undisturbed position from the start.

Olive Tree

Olea europaea

The tree that defines a Lebanese hillside. Slow, silver leaved, and effectively permanent once established, an olive will outlive the garden it is planted in. Our stock is field grown and hardened off, so it moves into open ground without sulking.
