A dense, glossy evergreen fig used everywhere in the region for shade, street planting, and heavy clipped hedging. Grows fast, takes hard pruning without complaint, and casts genuinely useful shade.

Melaleuca quinquenervia

Grown for its extraordinary bark, which peels in thick papery cream layers, and for creamy bottlebrush flowers that draw bees for weeks. Tolerates conditions that defeat most trees, including periodically wet ground.

Peruvian Pepper Tree

Schinus molle

Weeping, fine-textured, and evergreen, with pink peppercorn clusters that hang all through autumn. Extremely drought tolerant and a genuinely elegant shade tree for a dry Lebanese garden.

The most familiar indoor tree in the world, with small glossy leaves on gracefully drooping branches. Outdoors in frost-free coastal positions it becomes a substantial shade tree.
