The most familiar indoor tree in the world, with small glossy leaves on gracefully drooping branches. Outdoors in frost-free coastal positions it becomes a substantial shade tree.

How to care: Bright indirect light indoors and a position it can stay in permanently: ficus resent being moved and respond by dropping leaves, which is alarming but recoverable. Water when the top few centimetres of compost dry, never leaving it standing in water. Feed through spring and summer. Outdoors, treat as frost tender and keep the aggressive roots well away from paving and drains.
