Grown for its extraordinary bark, which peels in thick papery cream layers, and for creamy bottlebrush flowers that draw bees for weeks. Tolerates conditions that defeat most trees, including periodically wet ground.

How to care: Full sun in almost any soil, coping with both drought and seasonal waterlogging, which is a rare combination. Water while establishing, then very little. Fast growing and comparatively short-lived. Prune to a single leader early if you want a tree rather than a multi-stemmed shrub. Do not remove the peeling bark, since it is the whole point of the plant.
