Gardenia jasminoides

Grown entirely for the scent. Waxy white flowers against glossy dark evergreen leaves, strongest in the evening, which makes it the plant to put beside a door, a seating area, or an open window rather than at the back of a bed. Also sold as Cape Jasmine.

The hardest-working flowering shrub in the Mediterranean, flowering from late spring to autumn on almost no water, in almost any soil, including road verges and salt-blasted coastal sites. Every part of it is highly toxic.

Clear sky-blue flower clusters, a colour almost nothing else provides in summer heat, carried from spring right through autumn. Scrambles happily through other shrubs or over a low wall.
