Flowering Shrubs
Paperflower
Bougainvillea glabra
جهنمية
The bougainvillea that covers walls and rooftops across the region, its colour coming not from flowers but from papery bracts that hold for months. Ruthlessly drought tolerant and genuinely spectacular at scale.
- Blooming season
- Spring to autumn
- Flower colour
- Magenta, purple, pink, orange or white bracts
- How to care
- Full sun and sharply drained soil, and then a degree of neglect: bougainvillea flowers best when kept slightly dry and lean, while rich soil and generous water produce nothing but leaf. Water deeply but infrequently once established. Prune after each flowering flush to shape and stimulate the next. Roots are brittle, so disturb the root ball as little as possible when planting. Thorned, so site with care.
