The hardest-working flowering shrub in the Mediterranean, flowering from late spring to autumn on almost no water, in almost any soil, including road verges and salt-blasted coastal sites. Every part of it is highly toxic.

Flower colour: Pink, red, white, salmon or yellow
How to care: Full sun and any free-draining soil. Exceptionally drought, heat, and salt tolerant once established. Prune after flowering to keep it dense, cutting back by up to a third; it also regenerates from a hard cut to the base. Wear gloves, wash after handling, and never burn the prunings, since the smoke is toxic. Given the toxicity, site it thoughtfully where young children play.
