Cedar of Lebanon

Cedrus libani

The national tree, and the one specimen that changes a piece of land permanently. Young trees are narrow and upright; it is only with decades that the flat, layered canopy everyone recognises begins to form. Plant it for the people who come after you.

Atlas Cedar

Cedrus atlantica

The North African cousin of the Lebanese cedar, faster to establish and more tolerant of heat and poor soil. A strong choice where you want cedar presence sooner than a Cedrus libani will deliver it.

Blue Atlas Cedar

Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca'

The silver-blue selection of the Atlas cedar, and one of the strongest colour statements available in a large conifer. The foliage holds its blue through the whole year, reading almost metallic against a stone wall.

Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar

Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Pendula'

A living sculpture rather than a conventional tree. Trained over an arch or allowed to cascade down a bank, its weeping blue branches take whatever shape you give them, and no two specimens ever look alike.

Deodar Cedar

Cedrus deodara

The most graceful of the cedars, with soft drooping branch tips and a gently nodding leading shoot. Faster growing than the Lebanese cedar and more tolerant of summer heat, which makes it a practical large specimen for Lebanese gardens.

Golden Deodar Cedar

Cedrus deodara 'Aurea'

A golden-foliaged deodar that lifts a dark planting scheme through the whole winter. New growth emerges bright yellow and softens to gold, strongest on the outer, sun-facing branches.

Nordmann Fir

Abies nordmanniana

Dense, glossy, and soft to the touch, with needles that hold far longer than most firs. Best known as a premium Christmas tree, but a fine formal evergreen in the ground where summers are not brutally hot.

European Silver Fir

Abies alba

A tall, stately forest conifer with silver-banded needles and a strongly upright habit. A tree for altitude and for space, better suited to Lebanese mountain properties than to the coast.

White Fir

Abies concolor

The most heat and drought tolerant of the firs, with long soft blue-grey needles and an open, layered habit. The sensible choice where you want fir character without mountain conditions.

Korean Fir

Abies koreana

Compact enough for a real garden rather than an estate, and grown above all for the upright violet-purple cones it carries even on young plants. Needles show bright silver undersides that catch the light as they move.

Blue Spruce

Picea pungens

Rigid, symmetrical, and unmistakably blue, with the stiff prickly needles that distinguish a spruce from a fir at a touch. A strong architectural presence, particularly against stone or in snow.

Colorado Blue Spruce

Picea pungens 'Glauca'

The intensely silver-blue selection of the blue spruce, and the strongest colour of any conifer here. Formal, conical, and slow enough to stay in scale for many years.

Norway Spruce

Picea abies

Fast, tough, and inexpensive, with long pendulous cones and branches that sweep downward with age. The traditional European Christmas tree, and a reliable windbreak or screen at altitude.

Oriental Spruce

Picea orientalis

The most refined spruce in the group, with very short, dense, glossy dark needles and a narrow elegant outline. Slower and better mannered than Norway spruce, and more tolerant of heat.

Serbian Spruce

Picea omorika

Remarkably narrow for its height, with gracefully drooping branches turned up at the tips. Where you want a tall conifer but have almost no width to give it, this is usually the answer.

Mediterranean Cypress

Cupressus sempervirens

The dark exclamation mark of every Mediterranean landscape, and native to this region. Planted in a line it makes a windbreak and a boundary at once; planted singly it frames a view. Extremely long-lived and almost indifferent to drought.

Stone Pine

Pinus pinea

The umbrella pine of the Lebanese coast, unmistakable in silhouette and the source of the pine nuts used across the region's cooking. Young trees are rounded and bushy, and the flat-topped canopy only develops with real age.

Norfolk Island Pine

Araucaria heterophylla

Perfectly symmetrical tiers of horizontal branches, more architectural than any true pine. Frost tender, so it is a coastal tree in Lebanon and an excellent large container plant everywhere else.
