Fast, tough, and inexpensive, with long pendulous cones and branches that sweep downward with age. The traditional European Christmas tree, and a reliable windbreak or screen at altitude.

How to care: Full sun to light shade in moist, well-drained soil. Faster growing than most conifers here and useful where you need height quickly. Water through establishment and in extended drought. Shallow rooted, so stake young trees on exposed sites and avoid cultivating around the base. Tolerates clipping better than most spruces if used as a screen.
