Rigid, symmetrical, and unmistakably blue, with the stiff prickly needles that distinguish a spruce from a fir at a touch. A strong architectural presence, particularly against stone or in snow.

How to care: Full sun in well-drained soil; colour and density both suffer in shade. Water deeply through establishment, then moderately, avoiding both waterlogging and prolonged drought. Prefers cooler positions and can look tired in intense coastal heat. Do not shear. Remove lower branches only if you genuinely need the clearance, since the skirt to the ground is part of the effect.
