The dark exclamation mark of every Mediterranean landscape, and native to this region. Planted in a line it makes a windbreak and a boundary at once; planted singly it frames a view. Extremely long-lived and almost indifferent to drought.

How to care

Full sun and sharply drained soil, including poor, stony, and alkaline ground. Water through the first two summers only; after that it is genuinely drought proof and overwatering does more harm than neglect. The narrow columnar form is natural, but tying the crown loosely with soft twine prevents snow or wind splaying it open. Trim lightly in spring if used as a formal screen.
