Dense, glossy, and soft to the touch, with needles that hold far longer than most firs. Best known as a premium Christmas tree, but a fine formal evergreen in the ground where summers are not brutally hot.

How to care: Prefers cooler mountain conditions with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and struggles in hot dry coastal gardens. Give it partial shade from the fiercest afternoon sun at lower altitudes. Water regularly; this is not a drought-tolerant conifer. Mulch to keep roots cool. Prune only to remove damaged growth, and never cut the leader if you want the classic symmetrical shape.
