The earliest blossom in the orchard, sometimes as soon as February, which is exactly its weakness: a late frost catches the flowers and there is no crop that year. Plant it somewhere sheltered and slightly elevated where cold air drains away.

How to care

Full sun, free-draining soil, and shelter from late frost. Prune in late summer, never in winter, to limit disease entering fresh cuts. Water deeply through fruit swell but avoid heavy watering close to harvest, which splits the fruit. Apricots crop on both old and new wood, so pruning is mostly about keeping the canopy open. Most varieties are self-fertile, so a single tree will fruit.
