Scarlet trumpet flowers in early summer, then fruit that stores for months after picking. Drought tolerant once established and equally at home as a small tree or a thick informal hedge.

How to care: Full sun and free-draining soil, tolerating poor and even slightly saline ground. Water deeply but infrequently once established; erratic watering as fruit ripens is the main cause of splitting. Prune in winter to a few strong trunks, removing the suckers that appear constantly at the base unless you want a multi-stemmed shrub. Fruit forms on new growth from mature wood, so avoid shearing the whole canopy.
