Longer-lived and more forgiving than apple, with upright growth that suits a narrow space or a trained wall. Like apples it wants mountain winters, and it will happily outlast the person who plants it.

How to care: Full sun in deep soil that holds some moisture but never waterlogs. Plant a second pear variety nearby for reliable pollination. Water through dry spells while fruit swells. Prune in winter, keeping a clear central leader and removing crossing or inward growth. Pears are best picked slightly under-ripe and finished indoors, since fruit left to ripen fully on the tree often goes soft at the core.
