Black Mulberry

Morus nigra

توت أسود

Darker, sharper, and far better flavoured than the white mulberry, and the one worth planting for eating. Slow to start and long-lived, developing a leaning, characterful trunk with age.

How to care
Full sun in deep soil that holds some moisture. Water young trees through their first summers; mature trees cope alone. Prune only in midwinter when fully dormant to avoid heavy bleeding, and keep pruning minimal. Fruit stains badly, so site it away from terraces, pale paving, and washing lines. Ripe fruit will not keep, which is precisely why it is worth growing at home.
