The only palm native to continental Europe and North Africa, naturally multi-stemmed and shrubby rather than tall. Exceptionally tough, and the most regionally appropriate palm for a water-wise Lebanese garden.

How to care: Full sun and sharply drained soil, tolerating drought, heat, salt, and poor rocky ground with ease. Water through the first summers only. Grows slowly into a dense clump; remove suckers if you want a single trunk, or leave them for the natural form. The leaf stems are viciously spined, so site it away from paths and handle with heavy gloves.
