Palms
Canary Island Date Palm
Phoenix canariensis
نخيل الكناري
The grand landmark palm, with a massive pineapple-textured trunk and a crown that can span ten metres. This is a specimen tree for a driveway, a hotel forecourt, or an estate entrance, not for a small garden.

- Small orange dates, ornamental rather than edible
- How to care
- Full sun and free-draining soil, tolerating drought, salt air, and poor ground once established. Water deeply through the first two years. Remove only fully brown fronds, cutting close to the trunk, and never over-trim into a narrow tuft, which weakens the palm. Watch for red palm weevil, the single greatest threat to date palms in the region, and treat at the first sign of collapsing central fronds.
