Burgundy foliage and soft purple plumes that catch low sun and move constantly in the slightest breeze. The most-planted ornamental grass in the region, and deservedly so.

Flower colour: Burgundy-purple plumes
How to care: Full sun in well-drained soil; the purple colour fades badly in shade. Drought tolerant once established. Cut back hard to a low tuft in late winter before new growth begins. Treated as a perennial in warm coastal gardens and often as an annual at altitude, where hard frost kills it. Unlike the green species it is sterile, so it does not self-seed and become a nuisance.
