Fast, upright, and extremely tough, grown as much for the papery pink seed capsules that follow the insignificant flowers as for the narrow evergreen foliage. Purple-leaved forms are particularly striking.

How to care: Full sun in almost any free-draining soil, tolerating drought, heat, wind, salt, and poor ground. Water through establishment, then rarely. Fast growing and ideal for a quick screen or windbreak. Prune in late winter to keep it dense, as it becomes leggy if left entirely alone. Purple forms colour best in full sun and lean soil.
