The traditional plant of formal gardens: slow, dense, small-leaved, and capable of holding a crisp clipped edge for generations. Unmatched for low hedging, parterres, and topiary.

How to care: Partial shade to full sun in well-drained soil, ideally with roots cool and shaded. Water regularly while establishing and in drought, and mulch to protect the shallow roots. Clip in early summer and again in late summer, avoiding hot bright days which scorch the freshly cut leaves. Ensure good airflow to limit box blight, and never leave clippings sitting inside the plant.
