Zwartkop

Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop'

أيونيوم أسود

Rosettes so dark they read as black in full sun, held up on bare branching stems. An architectural plant that does the work of a sculpture in a courtyard or on a terrace, and asks for almost nothing in return.

Blooming season
Late winter, on mature rosettes only
Flower colour
Golden yellow
How to care
Full sun is what produces the near black colour, since in shade the rosettes revert to plain green. Plant in gritty, sharply draining compost and water only when the soil has dried right through, which in practice means rarely. Note that aeoniums reverse the usual rhythm: they grow through the cool wet months and go dormant in high summer, so ease off water in the hottest weeks. A flowering rosette dies after it blooms, which is normal, and the side branches carry the plant on.
