Prickly Pear
Opuntia ficus-indica
صبار التين الشوكي
The sabbar of the Lebanese roadside, with flat paddle stems, yellow to orange flowers, and the sweet summer fruit sold from carts across the country. Utterly drought proof and historically used as a living field boundary.

- How to care
- Full sun and sharply drained soil, tolerating extreme heat, drought, and poor stony ground. Water essentially never once established. Handle only with thick gloves and tongs: beyond the obvious spines, the fine hair-like glochids detach on contact and are far more unpleasant. Harvest fruit with tongs and rub or wash off the glochids before peeling. Remove pads to control spread.
