Large, thick, high-gloss leaves in deep green or burgundy on an upright stem that becomes a substantial indoor tree. A single well-grown specimen furnishes a room on its own.

How to care: Bright indirect light; burgundy forms need good light to keep their colour. Water when the top few centimetres of compost dry, reducing in winter, and avoid leaving it wet. Wipe the leaves regularly, since dust dulls them quickly and they are the whole point. Prune the top in spring to encourage branching. The milky sap irritates skin, so wear gloves when cutting.
